The “Open Hamburgers” sign on the Whitehouse Restaurant in Clare has to be oversized for the tiny building, or you’d miss one of the best burger joints in Michigan. In the 85 years since two brothers started serving hot dogs and burgers, tables doubled from three to six booths and the expanded menu challenges the cook— just feet from diners—to juggle hash browns, bacon, sandwiches and burgers on the seasoned flattop. Soups and desserts are homemade, omelets are worth the trip, and it’s so cozy that everyone shares in the conversation.
